Draw Me a Star

What is a star? A star is a very large ball of bright glowing hot matter in space. That matter is called plasma. Stars are held together by gravity. They give out heat and light because they are very hot. ... The amount of material in a star (its mass) is so huge that it starts a nuclear reaction going.

Assignment

Students will learn how to draw a 5 pointed star. We will create a compostition of stars using a variety of materials including pastels, crayons, pen, pencil, and colored pencils. Students will explore a variety of materials and see how they perform differently and similarly when approaching the same subject. Emphasize that the shapes may overlap or touch.

Have the students draw the intial star at whatever size they feel comfortable and then urge them to practice creating different sizes as a challenge to their planning and excecution of line trajectory.

Why This lesson

This lesson will teach students about line and creating shapes. By learning to draw a star, students will practice drawing point to point, keeping lines straight, planning the trajectory of a line, and creating a closed form. Practice will help develop small motor skills especially as we will work on many different sized stars.

Students will also learn that different media will change the look and feel of their subject in color, texture, and ease of using the material to create. Students will discuss material preferences and the reasons for those preferences.
