Late 1800's brooch. Silver clad with engraved yellow and rose gold. Victorians loved symbolism in their jewelry. The cicada is a symbol of rebirth and immortality. This piece was probably intended as a token of eternal love.

Eggs hatch and tiny nymphs make their way to the ground to burrow into the earth and feed on tree roots for the nest 13 or 17 years
