Learning about Birds
Birds are a group of warm-blooded vertebrates characterised by feathers, toothless beaked jaws, the laying of hard-shelled eggs, and a strong yet lightweight skeleton. Birds live worldwide and range in size from the 5.5 cm (2.2 in) bee hummingbird to the 2.8 m (9 ft 2 in) ostrich. Birds have wings whose development varies according to species. gave birds the ability to fly, although further evolution has led to the loss of flight in some birds, penguins. The digestive and respiratory systems of birds are also uniquely adapted for flight. Some bird species of aquatic environments, particularly seabirds and some waterbirds, have further evolved for swimming. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bird
Over 450 bird species have been documented in Maryland, and over half of these species have nested in the state. More than 100 species are considered vagrant or accidental in Maryland, having been found only once or a handful of times. Seventy-two species of birds are rare, threatened or endangered in Maryland

Anatomy of a Bird
Migration
Many bird species migrate to take advantage of global differences of seasonal temperatures, therefore optimising availability of food sources and breeding habitat. These migrations vary among the different groups. Many landbirds, shorebirds, and waterbirds undertake annual long-distance migrations, usually triggered by the length of daylight as well as weather conditions.
